Difference between limited and open edition prints?
Limited Edition Prints
Definition:
A limited edition photograph is produced in a fixed, predetermined number of prints. Once that number is reached, no more prints of that image (in that size and format) will ever be made. Currently, we limit our editions to 7 which are hand-signed, numbered and stamped and include a certificate of authenticity. Our LE prints are printed on the highest quality German fine art paper and are printed by a local certified fine art printer. The entire process is manually overseen by the artist.
Key Features:
- Fixed Quantity: For example, "Edition of 25" means only 25 prints will ever exist in that size.
- Signed & Numbered: Each print is typically signed and numbered by the artist (e.g., 5/25).
- Certificate of Authenticity (COA): Often includes a COA verifying edition number and details.
- Higher Value: Because of scarcity, limited editions are usually more collectible and can appreciate in value.
- Edition Variants: Artists may offer different limited editions by size or medium (e.g., 25 small prints, 10 large prints).
Open Edition Prints
Definition:
An open edition photograph can be printed as many times as the artist or publisher chooses, with no set limit on quantity. Our open edition prints are digitally signed in the bottom right corner of each piece and consist of high quality printing and framing.
Key Features:
- Unlimited Quantity: Prints can be produced indefinitely.
- Usually Unsigned or Unnumbered: May or may not be signed.
- More Affordable: Lower price point makes art accessible to a wider audience.
- Less Collectible: Because there's no scarcity, open editions typically hold less resale or investment value.
